Advice for the New Writer 2020

As an established author living in  obscurity, touted by the Hampton Book Awards as this generation William Shakespeare for our times is an incredible title and honor.

It took many years of hard work, and still I do not think I've learned everything or earned the title.

As a kid I was lucky enough to be in a fantastic writing class.

The experience expanded my mind and creativity.

If you cannot afford the classes, I suggest you ask your school or college to start a new writing program, or pick up a book in this subject matter at your local library.

The hard part, it will take years to become good and great.

If you cannot wait and you want to speed up the process, than download or buy audiobooks in the genre you have a talent for.

This should make the process easier, also you might want to take out movie videos or stream films especially books adapted to the screen.

It will teach you different writing styles that can prove useful.

First you must find your genre even if you have interests in one or more.

Write two pages in length, the one you are better at should be the first choice, then study the thropes, cliches.

Remember not everything you write is a home run.

This might be because you haven't found a storyline and major plot to write about or you cannot think of anything great or write from a new fresh prospective.

If so you might want to do this writing exercise.

As a kid I remember class mates saying aloud to our writing teacher " I don't know what to write" the best advice our teacher would say to her students was write what you know, it doesn't have to be a book you read.

Second take your favorite TV shows write about the characters in a new setting even if it's similar.

Basically what she was saying was to mash up our favorite shows into one seamless storyline that sounds plausible and believable.

Third all genres have cliches, it is your job as the great writer inside you to turn them on its head, by morphing and switching the notions around.

Case in point Mark Twain famously did this with The Adventures of Tom Sawyer.

At the time adventure treasure stories cliches were established long before Mark's novels. Typically the sea, lakes and rivers were dangerous and the land was a safe haven, a place in destination.

In Tom Sawyer it is the opposite.

The water is a safe haven and the land is treacherous.

Do you see how the theme and background effected the story telling in profound ways?

It is every fiction writers job to challenge and change old thoughts, ideas, cliches and make them new again.

I Hope this helps you.
